Shiva as the one with Chakra, Srivatsanka………Brahma is Achyuta…Kurmapurana

Shiva as the one with Chakra, Srivatsanka………Brahma is Achyuta…Kurmapurana

In the Kurmapurana which is a repository of several Vedantic concepts, Hari-Hara abheda, Trimurti aikya, Devi Bhaagavatam, Vishva rupa of Shiva, etc. we find the following material.  In fact the Kurmapurana has been cited extensively by Sri Vishveshvara Saraswati in the Yati Dharma Sangraha in showing the practices of Yatis involving Shiva meditation and worship, citing the Atharvashira Upanishad, that culminate in attaining moksha.

Brahma, in reply to the sages of the Daruka vana, informs them of the identity of the divine forms (of Shiva, in nude, and Vishnu, as his consort in female form): He is Mahadeva, to be known. There is nothing that is greater than him. He is Eternal.

He dissolves everything in Pralaya, having become Kaala.  He indeed creates all beings by his own power.

He is the one who dons the Chakra, the revolver of the kaala chakram, he is endowed with the Srivatsa. He is Yogi in the Krta yuga, yajna in the Treta yuga. In Dvapara he is Bhagavan Kaala, Dharma Ketu in the Kali yuga.

Rudra’s forms are three-fold with which the universe is pervaded. Tamo murti is Agni (destruction), Rajo murti is Brahmaa and Sattva murti is Vishnu.

Other murtis are the unclothed form, the auspicious feminine form. Where He is, all that is endowed with Brahman.

He (She) who is beside him, his wife, whom you all beheld, is indeed Narayana, Paramatma, the ancient.

From him all this is born, attains merger in him. He liberates all, he is the ultimate abode of all.

Sahasra shIrShA purusha…. is this Ancient Eight-syllabled Hari.

He is the four vedas, the four-formed, he is the trimurtis, he is the three gunas, the Supreme. He is One murti, beyond objectification, Narayana, so says the Shruti. His retas, garbha, is Aapas, his form is maayic. Mumukshus praise him by various mantras and braahmanas.

Having resolved everything, at the end of the Kalpa, Purushottama retires having imbibed the Yoga-nectar – That is the supreme Vishnu-state.

You do not know Him, the progenitor, due to his mAyA-delusion, who is Hara, the source, Lord, of all beings.

This Mahadeva, Anaadi, Bhagavan, Hara, coupled with Vishnu, creates and destroys.

There is nothing he has to do, nothing is there that is apart from him/greater than him. He, the maayic-bodied one, bestowed the Vedas in the yore to me (Brahma)
[This is the restatement of the Shvetashvataropanishat:

He, the Maayee (श्वेताश्वतरोपनिषत् – मायां तु प्रकृतिं विद्यात्, मायिनं तु महेश्वरम्) creates all and destroys too. All of you realize him for Moksha and hence take refuge in him, Bhava.

Having thus instructed by Bhagavan (Brahma), the sages such as Mareechee, bowed to him and with great regret ask him further….
The Kurma purana, this very chapter, says Brahma is Achyuta!!
The sages, fearing the forms and power of Shiva and Vishnu, approach Brahma, take refuge in Bhagavan (Brahma), Achyuta, Purushottama.

You indeed know whatever happens in this world. Bless us, O Vishvesha, hence protect us.

Having thus pleaded, Brahma, Vishvatma, the Lotus-born, having meditated upon the God with the TrishUla as his identification, with folded hands, spake thus….
One can notice that the status of Supreme is toggled between Hari and Hara elaborately and in the passing Brahma too.
We see that the Kurmapuranam is not doctoring the epithets with apologies such as ‘the epithets Bhagavan, Purushottama, Achyuta, Vishvesha, VishvAtman, etc.(here to Brahma) and ‘Chakri, Srivatsanka’, etc. to Shiva, in this very chapter above) refer to the antaryami  : – ), inner self, etc. Vedantins are not in such a predicament and thus are under no compulsion to do that. That is why even Veda Vyasa does not resort to such laughable foul practices. Only theological schools who cannot tolerate these epithets to be given to someone other than their finite deity (vastu paricchinna), desperately try to mislead their readers by adding apologies.

  1. Kurma Purana by referring to Narayana as Shiva’s wife corroborates what Appar has sung:

    Kind Regards
    Arun

    • Nice to know this.

  2. I read the whole chapter from Kurma Purana after reading your article. Excellent one Sir.
